Turn an IGCSE mock result into a realistic study plan
A mock score is useful only when parents and students know why marks were lost. The next step should separate topic gaps, exam technique, timing, answer quality and route questions before money is spent on a larger package.
What a mock result can and cannot tell you
The score matters, but the pattern behind the score matters more. Two students with the same percentage may need different support.

What we would look at before recommending lessons
A mock result rarely says “buy tutoring” by itself. A careful review reads the script the way a teacher would: where did the student nearly get the mark, where was the method missing, and which mistakes are still realistic to fix in the time left?
A Maths paper with a worrying score
If the working shows correct starts but poor algebra in the middle, the student may need a short method-and-accuracy block. If the working is mostly blank, live teaching may be needed earlier.
A Science script full of half-marks
This often means the student knows some content but is not writing in the way the paper rewards. The first useful step may be feedback on command words and practical-style answers.
An English answer that looks long but scores modestly
Length is not the same as control. A tutor would check task focus, paragraph choices, evidence use, sentence accuracy and whether the answer actually responds to the question.
Classify the lost marks before choosing support
Parents can make a better first purchase when the lost marks are grouped by cause.
Topic gap
The student has not learned or cannot recall part of the syllabus. This often needs teaching, guided practice or a focused topic block.
Method or working gap
The student knows the idea but loses method marks through missing steps, unclear working or weak explanation.
Exam technique gap
The student loses marks through command words, timing, question choice, units, graph handling or not answering the exact question.
Writing or wording gap
English, Science, Business and Economics answers may need better structure, evidence use, precision or evaluation.
Study routine gap
The student understands lessons but does not complete enough targeted practice between them.
Route gap
The exam board, paper route, tier, option route or private-candidate path may still be unclear.
Match the mock pattern to a sensible first step
The first paid step should reduce uncertainty. It should not automatically be the largest lesson package.

A useful plan changes with the time left before the next mock or final exam.

Subject, exam board, paper code, tier or route, and whether the paper was timed.
Marked evidence
Question paper, student answers, marks, mark scheme if available, and teacher comments.
Study constraints
Weekly availability, other subjects, upcoming deadlines and realistic practice time.
Parent decision
Whether the family wants diagnosis first, marking feedback, a study routine, regular lessons or exam-route clarity.
